What is Data Migration?
Data Migration is the very complex process of extracting data from one system, convert content and structure according to the requirements of a second system, and then load these converted data into this second system. In some cases, it is even required to split the converted data and data structure for load into more than one target system.
To be successful means to understand the data structure and the content of the source system first. Secondly, it is also required to understand the structure of the target system. Then, along with the business owners of these data the conversion exercise (mappings) can start. This process is a highly complex technical but also complex business subject.
Data Migration is also a good chance to get rid off organically grown content and structure.

Data migration usually involves not only mapping of fields between source and destination database but also to do complicated calculations, transformations or corrections. Sometimes it is even required to split the source database content into two or more destination databases.
